Amanda Taves is a research-based artist whose practice examines systems of exchange, transformation, and care. Her work explores experiences of departure and arrival to consider loss, intimacy, and the instability of time. Through an attention on material and psychological residue, she investigates the everyday rituals and traditions used to mediate grief; processes that generate meaning while often resisting closure.
Working in collaboration with life-sustaining and life-ending organisms, as well as forensic professionals, city officials, and community organizations, Taves considers how physical and social ecosystems shape concepts of legacy and lineage. Her projects foreground the interconnectedness of bodies, environments, and institutions, revealing how transformation is both continuous and unresolved.
Taves received an MFA in Photography from the University of Illinois at Chicago (2022) and a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2016). Her work has been presented by the Museum of Modern Art, Phoenix Museum of Art, and the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art. She has received support from various institutions, including the Chicago Cultural Center CAAP Grant, the Endsley Fellowship, and the Goldman Sachs Scholarship.
